Review: Zemismart Matter Over Thread Blind Driver
The Zemismart Roller Shade Driver is a device that can be retrofitted to many roller blinds and make them “smart”. There are many such products on the market, but what attracted me to Zemismart were two things in particular: they work on Matter over Thread (- I love Matter), and they are quite affordable. Keep reading for my full experience with them so far.

Packaging and quality
The device comes packaged in a box along with some accessories. Here’s what’s in the box:

- Mounting plate
- Screws and wall plugs/anchors for mounting

I was immediately impressed when I unboxed the device. It feels heavy and solid, in a positive sense. It can definitely be “hit or miss” ordering smart home products from China, but Zemismart is clearly on the higher end side of the spectrum.
Installing the device
Installation was quite self-explanatory and was made easy by the included user manual. Alternatively, plenty of instruction videos are available online that guide you through the process. In my case, I mounted the mounting plate to the window frame and slid the device onto it. After attaching the correct bead wheel, I connected the roller blind chain to the device and shut the lid.

As a part of the first setup, you have to follow some calibration steps. This way you configure the closed and open position of the blinds. The instructions stress that you should do this before connecting the Matter device.
Usage and noise
The device features a large knob that can be turned both sides. One side opens the blinds, the other side closes the blinds. Tapping the knob while the blinds are moving will stop the blinds at their position. Turning the knob further while the blinds are already moving, will cycle the device through 3 speed settings: slow, medium and fast. I have found that using the slow setting is more than sufficient and (likely) also saves battery.
The device makes a slight noise on the slow setting, but I have found it to not be obnoxious. I got used to the sound quite fast and could easily sleep through it. Do keep in mind that the higher speed settings cause it to make a little more noise.
Connecting to Home Assistant
After charging the device up to 100% through the USB-C port at the bottom, I was ready to add it to Home Assistant. I am using an Apple HomePod Mini as a Thread Border Router. Adding the device to Home Assistant was a breeze. I opened the Home Assistant app, scanned the QR Code on the device and added the Matter device within minutes.

The device is recognized as a “cover” in Home Assistant and can be controlled in various ways. E.g. a slider, up/down controls, percentage controls and more. Plenty of options to suit your needs. Personally, I prefer the simple up/down controls.

Automations!
Here’s where this device really starts to prove itself useful. Since it can be controlled fully (locally) through Home Assistant, Apple Home etc. you are free to automate it however you like. Open the blinds when I get home, close the blinds when the sun sets, open the blinds when my morning routine runs… you name it.
I have two simple automations set up: to open the blinds at a fixed time every morning, and close them 30 minutes before sunset. That’ll look a little something like this in Home Assistant:

Battery Life
I started using the Zemismart Roller Shade Driver on the 19th of July 2026 with 100% of battery life. I am curious to see how the battery will hold up the coming months. With an automation that controls the blinds twice a day, I should be able to create a clear image in a few months time. I’ll be sure to update this blog post to reflect my findings.
Conclusion
I am extremely positive about the Zemismart Roller Shade Driver. While skeptical at first, I was surprised by the product’s quality and ease-of-use. Local control through Matter over Thread is a huge plus and has proven to work reliably after more than a week of consistent usage.
This product is, to me, a good example of a useful and reliable smart home product. Easy to integrate and providing that slight improvement in quality of life.
